Description of The Lycian Way walking holiday in Turkey

Spend just over a week walking along the beautiful Lycian Way, Turkey’s best known long-distance footpath. This small group walking holiday in Turkey, led by a local guide, takes us along a scenic trail of ancient ruins, time-forgotten Turkish villages and sublime coastal landscapes.

This Lycian Way walking holiday covers distances of between eight and 18 kilometres a day, exploring marked trails and old Roman roads that link together little-visited towns and historic sites.  Our guide is on hand to offer interesting insights into the local culture and history, and we’ll stay in village houses, try fresh produce and meet some of the local families.

On our way we’ll visit the ghostly, abandoned village of Kayakoy, where we can walk around the crumbling streets and buildings that lie abandoned. We’ll also discover the ancient city of Sidyma, home to some unusual tombs, and the ruins of Patara, where you can kick off your shoes and enjoy the refreshing ocean with a walk along Patara beach.

Trekking through scented pine forest, we’ll stop at the traditional village of Faralya to admire the spectacular views of the valley below. Known as Butterfly Valley, this remote, untouched gorge leads down to a pristine sandy beach, and is named after the hundreds of butterfly species that flourish here. You’ll likely be keen to cool off with a sea dip, so take the chance to swim in some of the secluded bays around Kekova during our boat tour of the sunken ruins.

We visited remote villages with ancient ruins mixed in with farm houses, well off the tourist trail. The boat trip, swimming and barbecue on the second last day was a highlight... The holiday was excellent, and fulfilled all our expectations. Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

This trip travels overland, following Turkey's Lycian Way trail. The Lycian Way is a 509km footpath around the coast of southern Turkey and one of the most beautiful long distance walks in the world. Walking is not only a low impact way to travel but it takes us to hard to visit places and small villages such as Faralya which feel a million miles away from the main tourist centres.

During the drives, large water containers are provided in the buses making it easy for passengers to refill their own water bottles, discouraging the need for single use plastic bottles.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

People

The village houses on this trip are a fantastic way to really experience some beautiful locations, to try amazing freshly produced and traditional food and to meet the local families that live in this region.

We visit small tea houses to enjoy an apple or mint tea amongst the chatter of the locals and the tour leader encourages the group the eat in Turkish restaurants to savour locally sourced food and recipes.

All our leaders in Turkey are local so they can give a real insight into the culture and history of this fascinating country. We also use local boat providers to access Simena village and see the sunken city of Kekova, this provides direct employment to these small businesses and ensures that money stays within the communities that we visit.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
