Description of Amalfi Coast walking holiday, Italy

Amalfi coast walking holidays are exactly what you need to fill your life with an artist's palette of colour along one of Europe's most scintillating, and romantic, coastlines.

This eight-day Amalfi coast walking holiday takes place against a classic Mediterranean backdrop with mountains ascending out of the ocean ringed by walking trails and winding narrow roads.

Secret grottos and coves align the shore and make Amalfi coast walks as much about getting outdoors as they are about rest and rejuvenation. Further up the steep mountain slopes you'll be invited to follow ancient donkey trails and well-worn footpaths leading to out of the way villages and towns where citrus groves span deep gorges and ocean views are simply sublime.

This Amalfi coast walking holiday leads travellers over the Agerola Plain in order to experience the slim snaking streets of traditional Italian villages where local stores, stone churches and rustic bars provide a fascinating insight into the day-to-day lifestyles of coastal communities.

From the abundant lemons, bursting with zest, to the regional wines, made for long hot summer evenings, this area of southern Italy is a foodies' paradise with plenty of free time included within the itinerary to help travellers get to grips with the gastronomic delights of the Amalfi coast.

Alternative adventures to experience whilst walking the Amalfi coast include walks up Mount Vesuvius as well as visits to the semi-preserved citadels of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both of which offer a unique glimpse into the lives of the ill-fated Romans who once lived on the fertile volcanic slopes.

The final full day of this eight day Amalfi coast walking holiday concludes with one of the most scenic walks on the planet, the aptly named: Walk of the Gods, so if you're looking to round off your week in style then there's no better opportunity to do just that.

Holiday information

Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modeled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, travelling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. For those with limited time, a small group tour will save valuable time in planning, and on holiday.
Our top tip:
Much of the terrain is uneven so we recommend hiking boots (not trainers!) and walking poles.
Trip type:
Small group tour. 4-16 adults (min. age 16) with a tour leader.
Activity level:
Leisurely. 4 days’ walking, av. 10-12km per day, 4-6 hours.
Accomm:
A family run, 3* hotel with a pool.
Solos:
Solo travellers welcome. Single rooms available with surcharge.
Included:
Accommodation, all listed activities, some meals, flights (if booked).
Meals:
All breakfasts, 4 packed lunches from local bakery, 6 dinners (3-4 course Italian food, at hotel).
Train Travel:
If you prefer to travel by train we can book a this for you from and to London and the nearest train station to the start point of the holiday. Contact us for full details and prices.
Dietary requirements:
We can cater for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Activity:
Few holidays have as little detrimental impact on the environment and local residents as a walking trip. It is a quiet, low impact activity requiring comparatively little resources to support. Erosion on and adjacent to popular paths is a growing problem and our trip leaders encourage clients not to stray from paths to minimise this. We do believe in leaving more than just footprints, however; this walking tour actively encourages guests to chat with local people, visit local cafes and bars, purchase local produce, gifts and crafts and discover what life is really like along the Amalfi Coast.

UK office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

People

Accommodation & meals:
We spend the week in the family-run Hotel Le Due Torri in Agerola, a relatively unknown area of Amalfi, so our guests are providing income to an area that does not usually benefit from tourism. All the hotel food is homemade, using locally produced and sourced goods where possible, and guests often have the opportunity to learn from their hosts how to prepare a traditional Neapolitan pizza one evening. The hotel recently installed solar panels which provide hot water for all rooms all year round.

Community:
The trip visits a local mozzarella factory, and all money spent here goes directly to supporting and maintaining this very traditional family business. We use a local bakery for packed lunches.

Group size:
This small group tour has a maximum of 16 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in a unique, family-run hotel that cannot benefit from big coach tours and other mass tourism due to its limited size.
