1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying in the village of Castara was memorable for its laid back vibe, friendly locals, authentic restaurants, entertainment, beautiful beaches and even a secret waterfall.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The accommodation is built on a hillside, so there is a bit of a climb up, be prepared.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We frequently ate in the local restaurants, shopped in the local stores. We were encouraged to recycle bottles etc at the apartment. The birdwatching trip was brilliant and the importance of conserving Tobago’s incredible rainforest.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant. Fabulous accommodation, friendly helpful staff, delicious food, fabulous beaches, an authentic island with plenty of personality. Full marks

Thanks for your review - we really appreciate the comments around our restaurant - Caribbean Kitchen. Our amazing restaurant team are all local, Tobagonian born, and they're so enthusiastic about showcasing local, traditional food in an elevated way. The whole team is receiving some fabulous training this Autumn and we'll be launching a new Caribbean-fusion menu with a stronger emphasis on locally sourced and grown foods, with sustainable eco principles at its heart. The dishes will be simple and innovative, showcasing local ingredients at their very best.

Stunning views of Castara Bay from our accommodation. Such a beautiful and unspoilt beach. The village is lovely and the people are so friendly

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Newton Heorges bird watching trips are excellent and also give a good overview of the island.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. The staff are locally employed. Local economy must benefit from the accommodation's holidaymakers.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant. Everything we hoped for. It seems a quiet, unspoilt part of the Caribbean.

Hi Lyndsay, we’re delighted you had such a wonderful stay with us and thank you for your review and kind words. Just wanted to add for those reading this review - we put guests in touch directly with the fantastic Newton George for guided bird/nature watching trips via our team locally upon arrival. There are several trips that we advise on and connect people to – including island hopping and fishing boat trips and snorkelling, among others. Relating to our contribution to conservation of the island, we currently sponsor a reef regeneration project and have implemented several initiatives to either reduce our impact on the island – for instance constructing grey water soakaways to ensure the beach, reefs and bay are protected from our waste water – or to enhance the islands biodiversity - through extensive tree and shrub planting, which also maximises soil retention and avoids soil erosion and landslides. More information about our approach to sustainability is on our website. Thanks again Lyndsay!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We took a trip into the rain forest with expert guide Newton George. The fauna, particularly birds, and flora is outstanding as you would expect in the western world's oldest protected environment having gained protection in the 1770s. To put that in perspective, the USA became an independant nation in 1776. Newton is one of a number of guides, but has an enviable reputation; indeed, we understand that he's provided advice to no less than David Attenborough for his programmes. He is guide of choice recommended and booked by our 'resort'. It is worth noting that they take no commission.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get to know the locals; this is one of the friendliest countries I've been to. Just say hello to them and you receive a fantastic response back. Even those whose appearance might make you feel wary in other places will turn out to be lovely, helpful and welcoming. We never subject to any hassling, hawking or even mildly threatening or offensive behaviour.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In the village of Castara, most businesses were owned or at least had direct involvement of the locals. This was not a place run by corporate organisations for the benefit of a few already well off individuals. It was the local community that gained from having us there. Much of the island offers wonderful support for conservation including the protection of the rainforest and marine environments including for marine turtle (such as leatherbacks) beach nesting sites. The only downside is that Tobago still has some way to go to undertake effective recycling and disposal of refuse. The Retreat is recycling bottles, both glass and plastic, composting appropriate material and has grey-water management.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was a wonderful holiday, despite restrictions ongoing due to the Covid pandemic (for example, facemasks were required even when outside). The people were so friendly and the island of Tobago is an outstanding sanctuary for flora and fauna, both on land and in the sea.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Rain, quaintness of village, quiet, birds, rain forest, fantastic view and the yoga class was excellant

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This trip is not about snorkeling or swimming. It is about birds, yoga, rain and sleep. Best to come in the spring when i hear the rain forest is blooming. Many steps not for someone challenged by that

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, owned by locals

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Waking up to the view was amazing. Yoga with judha. Temperature perfect. But i came for snorkeling and swimming and that isn't really a thing here. Maybe diving somewhere else

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Just being in Tobago and the experience of being in the West Indies for the first time. We were very well looked after at the accommodation. There is a lot to do on the island but just relaxing and doing nothing was also lovely as the accommodation was very comfortable. I liked the large living spaces (bedroom and Kitchen/sitting/dining area). The view from terrace of the accommodation was not as wonderful as I had expected and this was a bit of an initial disappointment.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

None. Just take it as you find it and enjoy it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, but not always in a good way. I don't think I will want to be in Castara in a few years time as it is being developed for tourism.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable but I am unlikely to go back as I found other islands in the West Indies which suited my 'away from it all' needs better.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Waking up to that gorgeous view every day. It really is as pretty as it looks in the photos.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We went in August school holidays, with 3 children. Be prepared for heat, humidity, lots of mosquitoes and sand flies. Also, there is not a huge amount to do on the doorstep, except for amazing swimming/snorkelling on the gorgeous beach. It's a small fishing village. During our two weeks we went for a day trip on Porridge's boat, a couple of wonderful day trips (into the rainforest and to Liitle Tobago) with local bird expert Newton George, hired a car for two days and visited Englishman's Bay, Tobago Cocoa Plantation and the Argylle waterfalls, walked to the local waterfall...and then had lots of days on the beach and the Retreats' sun beds. This suited us fine but just saying. Also be warned, when they say you can't buy a lot in the village, that's correct. We brought some essential foodstuffs with us and took up the offer of supermarket shopping near the airport on arrival, even though it was hard after a long journey.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think and hope so. The owners seem to have put a lot of thought into this. The accommodation is built on a hillside just at the side of the village. Clever engineering but it doesn't appear to dominate and blends in well. As visitors we ate out in the village, bought groceries from the local shops daily, homemade bread from the ladies at the village's outdoor oven and souvenirs from the little blue shed. We always had a friendly or natural welcome - like it was no big deal that we were sharing the village's facilities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, one of our best yet.
