Description of Climb Mount Toubkal walking holiday

Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, is one of the best mountain climbs around, because it is accessible, highly rewarding, and has great views.

This trip starts in the heart of the city of Marrakech, but soon whisks you into the mountains. Enjoy the contrasts that a few contour lines can bring. It’s always surprising how close Marrakech is to the High Atlas Mountains, and how quickly you go from the warm city to the cool slopes of the mountains. Once you get to Imlil – a quiet village that’s now a hub for hikers – you’ll start your trekking through the Imlil Valley.

This is a hut to hut walk with five days of trekking. The walking is on mountain paths, with some steep climbs and long ascents. The going is moderate – you’ll walk between five and six hours every day.

You’ll stay in Berber style buildings, a Berber village house and a sociable mountain refuge with fellow climbers, where you can swap stories of your ascent – the accommodation en route is basic but suits tired legs and eyes.

On the day of your final ascent, you’ll climb from Neltner Refuge at 3207m to Jebel Toubkal’s peak at 4167m – a total day’s climbing of 960 metres over 3.5 km – followed by a similar descent and a walk back to Imlil. It’s a fantastic achievement to stand on the ceiling of the country, with mountains poking out of clouds stretching around you.

Return to Marrakesh for time to celebrate your achievement among the crowds in Djemma el Fna Square.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

This walking trip to Morocco concentrates on the High Atlas Mountains south of Marrakech. Travelling on foot we follow marked footpaths through the mountain valleys and to the summit of Jebel Toubkal, ensuring that we keep to the designated paths so as not to disturb wildlife and fauna and have an adverse affect on the beautiful landscape.

We run a Toubkal litter programme for all our trekking trips in Morocco, and are currently the only company with such an initiative in place. At the base of Toukbal, around the Neltner refuge, the group can assist in a litter sweep of the area, we provide rubbish sacks and gloves. We also pay for an additional donkey to accompany the group to carry both our litter and the litter picked along the mountain trails to take this away to be properly disposed of.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

People

The communities living in and around the Atlas Mountains are of Berber origin, welcoming and hospitable they rely on tourism and are responsible for helping to develop the area as a tourist destination in a sustainable way, ensuring that the culture and traditions live on. During the days walks there is the opportunity to buy snacks, water and crafts from small local shops along the paths. This provides direct income for the more isolated communities in the Atlas Mountains as well as a chance for the group to interact with the local Berber’s. Staying in village houses also enables us to get closer to the local culture and gain an insight into their lives. Using locally owned accommodation not only provides direct employment but also has the effect of distributing money to small businesses within the villages.

We have worked together with our local agent in Morocco for many years now and we’re proud of their responsible practices and strong ethics when it comes to tourism within Morocco. The team are regularly involved with our responsible business projects. In 2017, we funded the purchase of three looms for a women’s only cooperative based on the suggestion and brilliant business proposal from our Moroccan partner. The office staff and the on the road teams work hard to find meaningful and sustainable projects in Morocco that we can get involved with both financially and by raising awareness through our customers.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
