Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Carbon Reduction

Our transport is our legs. We walk great distances to go about our daily lives.

The community have a 'Tiny Forest' initiative where seed pods of indigenous trees are collected by children at the local primary school run by your village host. These are then grown into saplings and planted out in the community to generate small forest areas to help counter the deforestation that is so rampant in Malawi, as well as reducing our carbon footprint.

Environment and wildlife

The children at the local village school are taught about environmental issues and have a very active conservation club where hearts and minds are being changed towards the protection of wildlife and natural resources.

Water is precious; we know this better than anyone. We have hand dug water wells in our community to provide safe, clean drinking water. We therefore do not waste water - it is hard come by.

Our visitor facilities are made out of natural resources including grass and mud so we have no negative impact in this respect! We use candles or hurricane lamps and cook using fallen wood.

Local Economy

The income from our village homestay provides both a livelihood for the individual host family and benefit to the village and wider community. For each 80 usd paid to stay in our village overnight, 20 usd goes towards community development via the small charity that the community runs -The Brown Munthali Foundation. This is used to help maintain the local village primary school and pay teachers' salaries, for medical and food support for orphans in the community, and much more.

We also help out people in our community who have problems; like paying for their health costs when they are sick or helping out with vulnerable children's school fees.

We are working hand in hand with the UK-based social enterprise Tribal Voice Communications and the UK charity the High Five Club on this responsible tourism initiative with the aim of reducing poverty and changing lives through driving the sustainable tourism agenda forward in Malawi for the benefit of local communities like ours.
